Agreed, Students each has their own individuality. We are only human so we commit mistakes because no one is perfect.

Very well written... your experience and the message that you have conveyed is not only relevant to a teacher but also to parents. So many time we come across such situations, and more often than not react in a way we should not have. The next time I come across a similar situation with my child, I am sure I will remember this story.

Shalini, I am so impressed with your profound judgment and understanding of a child's mentality. I wish all the teachers understood that even children need to be respected, and that simply punishing a child for a wrong that he has done won't help improve the child. The teacher needs to make the child realize his mistake without making him lose his self-esteem.

You are absolutely right……teachers have tremendous power. Even most of the parents turn up saying, “my child says I will do (about a task)in this way because Ms Jyoti said it so” and also if parents want their child to do something they ask us teachers to convince the child. Most of the children take teachers as their role- model. So I really appreciate ur idea of setting an example in front of children

This is what we teachers r supposed to do. I have two students of age 10 and 11 studying in 5th std. Both r brothers and always quarreling. They do not share even a pencil, and if one does out of my compulsion, the other will have a hell of a time at home. I could understand the severity of this when one day they had a homework to do about family relationship, wherein they had to writ abt the love of family members. I asked them if they loved their parents, and if the parents loved them. Their answer was in the affirmative. When I asked them if they loved each other, their face fell and they would not even look at me. Then I made them say " I love Ebin, he is my brother" and "I love Bibin, he is my brother".They were asked to repeat the same for some time. They were secretly glancing at each other and smiling. After sometime, when one of them needed an eraser, the other one readily offered it, and the first one happily accepted it. Even their mother told me that she has noticed a change in their attitude towards each other. I think we teachers can do wonders, and only we can do that. Congrats!!!Shalini well done.

Oh!This makes me really nostalgic. While reading through the article, I was recalling my student days. Hoping I don't sound boasting but I was rather a simple kid but then there were other 'mischeivious' fellow students whom teachers had hard time handling. I distinctly remember one of my English teacher, Asha Tripathi Mam, who was generously sweet with us. She had her own charming ways of talking and making us learn.I must confess here that she made me accept this foreign language in my early years and be comfortable with it. Mind you, she was not strict, very loving yet firm and we all enjoyed her classes the most!

Dear Shalini.
your observations about a good teacher are correct. As I am concerned, From the 26 years of teaching experience,I have so many circumsances like your's.A teacher has to concider even silly matters presented by pupils.they have also their own individuality.
Your experiences are great.your dealins are also worthy.I think now you are a well experienced teacher.
